Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful bright yellow sulphur butterfly with one prominent dark spot and one white spot under the wings. Top of the wings are a black pattern that, with the dark spot underneath forming the eye, makes a dogface pattern when backlit.

Habitat:

Longleaf pine habitat. All the Dogfaces I saw were nectaring in the white flowers that I think are called Summer Farewell.

Notes:

These butterflies are pretty rare and are hard to find east of the Mississippi unless you know someone who knows someone who knows where to look.
