Hi James.. carapace is a head covering shell like in crabs or on cephalothorax on spider etc.... not really for beetle elytra (wing covers). Sorry.. just trying to help.
shy bug i think, just after this shot it fall in to the grass and i couldn't find again! usual trick :)
A neat bug, but he was a bit rude turning his back on you...
