In southern Africa we only get subspecies encedon (i.e. Telchinia encedon subsp. encedon). The other subspecies, T. encedon rathjensi is found in south-western Arabia. (Source: Wikipedia, Acraea encedon).
Thanks, as you might have seen, there is a lot of Acraeas here in the reserve right now. So perhaps we will be able to collect more photos of them.
Tina, I would say yes. I just took this link from your perevious ones: http://www.sntc.org.sz/biodiversity/sdbutterflyphotos.asp?pid=307&spid=643 I do not know if there are others subspecies of Telchinia encedon found in your area or elsewhere. In neotropical butterflies subspecies are sometimes very important, since they represant a special phenotype or special location of a butterfly that makes it different from others. If this is the case in yours, I cannot judge profoundly.
Thank you Ali :) Bay, Telchinia encedon encedon? Jees I am confused! Shoud this one http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/173436036 also be a double encedon?
Yes, Telchinia encedon encedon.
Pam, there has just been a couple of rainy days here and there are so many butterflies now! There are still many species that we hope to get monitored, and I am so glad you are coming here and supporting us! All the rangers are looking forward to meet you :D
Wow, so many butterflies uploaded already... I can't wait!
This is most likely another White-barred Acraea. One that can look similar is the Window Acraea, but the spots on the wings on that one look a bit different on that one. The colours can be very variable: http://www.sntc.org.sz/biodiversity/sdbutterflyinfo.asp?spid=643
