Field Notes

Description:

My little leopard tortoise named Tostada. A male, given to me as a birthday present. I've had him for a while and he's grown quite a bit from the tiny hatchling he was when I got him.

Habitat:

Tostada lives in a 4 foot by 2 foot pin with a dirt/coir mix for his substrate. I also have a 4 inch pvc pipe filled with some sphagnum moss for him to hide in. He has a small water pool, cuttlefish bone, some rocks for him to climb on, and the water catching dish part of a terracotta pot for his food to sit on. He's very happy and active. I was thinking of putting some live plants into his enclosure but wasn't sure what. I do have several species native to Africa. In the wild, leopard tortoises can be found in most of Africa.

Notes:

Leopard tortoises used to be in the Geochelone genus, but have since been taken out along with some other species of tortoise and reclassified somewhat recently. Leopard tortoises are the only member of the Stigmochelys genus.
