Field Notes

Description:

A real monster of a Crane Fly with a body of almost 6 cm. I've never seen one so large. Family Tipulidae. The characteristic "V" shaped groove on the thorax is a virtual canyon. The wings are heavily patterned.

Habitat:

Hiding on a bush in the garden, semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This is probably a species of Holorusia, most of which are Asiatic in distribution, except for H. rubigenosa and H. hespera. This specimen just doesn't look like the few pictures of the above mentioned species.

Species ID Suggestions

giant crane fly

Holorusia rubiginosa

Thank you sanmiggums for your suggestion. I think you are right about the genus, but the species just doesn't seem to match. There are so few pictures to compare this one to. The wings on this one are very patterned. There is almost no information on Mexican Tipulids.
