Geometer Moth
Pingasa ruginaria
15.4558, 119.921
Field Notes
Description:
Geometridae; Geometrinae; Geometrini; Pingasa ruginaria (Guenée, 1857). The Genus Pingasa is present in the Philippines. Philippine Lepidoptera display only one fully identified species - Pingasa chlora. They also show eleven Pingasa spp. (10 are dorsal views and 1 is a ventral view). They all bear some similarity to the moth in my photos, but none are exactly the same So, I looked to Wikipedia for distribution information and Southeast Asia (which, obviously, includes the Philippines) is there in the very first sentence. Wiki also mention 6 Pingasa ruginaria ssp. with no information on their distribution. I will try to find out if my photos represent one of these subspecies and update this spotting, if necessary.
Habitat:
This Geometer Moth was spotted on the outside of a window, overlooking our front garden
Notes:
This moth presented me with an opportunity to take photos of the ventral view (1st. picture) and the dorsal view (2nd. picture). The window glass was speckled with dust and raindrops, as it always is in the rainy season. So, the ventral view (taken through the glass from inside the house) has the whitish dust speckles showing up against the dark brown patterns of the wings. However, if you look at the surrounding area of glass first and then the moth, you can quite easily tell that the speckles are not part of the moth's colouring. The brown patches on the moth have no speckles. The dorsal view of the moth, obviously, has no such problems as there is nothing between the camera and the moth.
