Field Notes

Description:

Several females seen hiding from the midday sun underneath parked cars. These are medium-sized birds that are golden brown with dark beaks, wings and tails.

Habitat:

This group was spotted in the parking lot of Florida's Everglades National Park.

Notes:

Grackles are native to and found yearlong in the area where these were spotted, as well as some cities in the southeastern US.

I guess I learned something today. I was thinking the ID wasn't right, but then I looked at Cornell's "All about birds." I had no idea female grackles were so different than the males. Thanks for the lesson :-) Cool shot.
Sounds like a nice vacation. Yes, they seem unafraid to approach us and are always on the lookout for food. :)
Your welcome Mauna. I just found about these birds a few weeks ago while vacationing on the gulf coast. I've had to take a crash course on Alabama and Florida birds. Interesting birds - they don't mind getting close to humans. The ones I saw were on a fishing pier and would get within a meter of the fisherman. I think they were trying to steal their bait or lunch or anything they could.
