Description:
This plant may reach 16 feet in height and produces indigo colored, edible berries.
Habitat:
Native to the American neotropics, from Mexico to Paraguay. In Hawaii, Southeast Asia, Australia and East Africa, it is considered highly invasive.
Notes:
In Latin, "hirta" means "scrubby". Also, the common name for this plant derives from the name of the man who accidentally first introduced it to Fiji.
