Field Notes

Description:

Small (~ 5 mm body length, ~ 1.5 cm overall) dull yellow spider with longitudinally symmetrical brown and white ventral markings on its abdomen and brown bands on legs.

Habitat:

Semi-arid windward tropical insular ridge of mixed shrubland and grassland. Original ecosystem modified by long-term human presence.

Notes:

Spotted in its web next to middle part of the road to Makapuu Lighthouse on Oahu.

BlueAppaloosa: Thanks. The spotting is visually similar to a spotted orbweaver, other characteristics agree, and the species has been reported in Hawaii. That's good enough for me, and I edited the spotting accordingly.
