Description:

Purple martins are about 8" in size. The males are dark, purplish blue in color. The females are gray below. Both have forked tails. These birds like to build their nest in gourds.

Habitat:

These purple martins were spotted in a yard off the Gulf of Mexico in Pascagola, Mississippi. Someone had placed gourd nests and the martins were taking advantage of them. Good idea.
