Field Notes

Description:

Great blue herons stand about 115–138 cm (45–54 in) in height and, as their name implies, mostly a bluish gray, thighs are reddish. The neck is reddish-gray, with black and white stripes down the front. The face is light-colored with a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The bill is greenish-yellow. Both sexes look similar.

Habitat:

Typically found on wetlands, lakes, and rivers, but occasionally found in uplands hunting small rodents and amphibians. Nests in colonies in treetop nests.

Notes:

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is one of my favorite places to photograph wildlife, especially in winter when 10s of thousands snow geese and sandhill cranes may be found.
