Field Notes

Description:

Back is dark brown/black, breast streaked with a light-sandy color, dark red eye and black stripe behind eye. Tail has 3 black stripes with the end of the feathers tipped white. The average female usually weighs 330 to 700 g (12 to 25 oz) and measure 42 to 50 cm (17 to 20 in) long.

Habitat:

Mixed deciduous forests, meadows and suburban areas. Commonly seen at bird feeders trying to get an easy meal.

Notes:

I was just skating down the street at the edge of my neighborhood and I look up and see her sitting in the tree. So I get off my longboard, kick it to the sidewalk, and start snapping pictures. She looked down often, trying to figure out what I was doing. Afterwards I got back on my board and continued on.
