Field Notes

Description:

I have always seen this balls in some pines and oaks but never seen them with this orange covering. I put it under fungi but it may be a plant parasite. Still more strange is that I found dozens of ants coming in and out of these "balls" (pic No. 3). Maybe they have the ant nest inside. The last pic is the "normal" look.

It has been suggested it might be a Pineapple gall adelgid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineapple_gall_adelgid But the orange part is still a mystery. Thanks Christine Y.
