Description:

Yellow-shafted flicker visiting our bird bath. The scientific name is Colaptes aurtaus aurtaus. Colaptes comes from the Greek verb colapt meaning "to peck". Aurtaus comes from the Latin root aurat meaning gold or golden and refers to the bird's underwing. In Alabama this bird is known as "yellowhammer".

Habitat:

Our 10 acre partially wooded property in northern rural Michigan.
