Description:
Very similar to the Red Saddlebags, and perhaps not distinguishable in the field. Length: 45-54 mm
Habitat:
Ponds, slow streams with emergent vegetation. Eastern United States, especially southeast. This one was photographed at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center near Jackson (Aiken County), SC.
Notes:
This could be a Red Saddlebags (Tramea onusta), since Carolina Saddlebags and Red Saddlebags are hard to differentiate in the field. Clear patch in middle of saddlebags near the body at the base of the hindwing distinguishes the Red Saddlebags from T.carolina. Also, not much black on the tip of the abdomen, and that only on the top; in T.carolina, the black continues around the sides of the abdomen tip
