Field Notes

Description:

-They have hard shells.
-the shells have two sides that are sealed shut and are attached at a hinge.
-Over time the shell will change colors. As a juvenile it will be a yellowish-brown and as an adult it will be a glossy black color. It will also get thicker.
-These creatures have an appendage attached to the base of their shell which is called a foot. This allows them to stay in place, move across the river bottom, and burrow into the ground.
-This pearl shell will get to be about 10cm-13cm long with some reaching lengths of 17cm long.
-This was originally from the rivers and streams of England.
-They can live to be 280 years old.
