Field Notes

Description:

Small, about 50 cm long lance-head viper (juvenile?), light brown with yellow underside and yellowish bands. Slender body with very distinguished neck and triangular head. Quite placid, never getting agitated while I was taking pictures (from a safe distance, of course).

Habitat:

Thick rainforest in the Ecuadorian amazon region.

Not too bad. I maintained a revolving exhibit of 25-50 snakes here in the jungle for educational and rescue purposes for 25 years without getting bitten. Then twice within 5 weeks. Very freakish circumstances both times. The hospital on the edge of the jungle was "an experience."

Hi Felix. I didn't have to go far to identify that snake. I've been bitten by the Bothrops atrox twice, once by a 5 footer, 22 days in the hospital total. As long as they think they are safe, they are docile, but can change moods in a hurry. Nice shot.
