Long tailed Weasel
Mustela frenata
41.6401, -122.695
Field Notes
Description:
This little weasel literally popped out of no where, staying true to the saying "pop goes the weasel" It was the most delightful bundle of cuteness and attitude.Hardly 3 to 4 inches ,with a triangular face, long slender body ,a long neck and tail. You can imagine my surprise and joy.Curious as babies are and playful,it scampered back and forth across the path, peeking at me .I whistled to it and talked with it and then it was time to say goodbye.Reluctantly I did so.The next day before returning home from Mendocino,I told my husband lets go back to that spot.We might be lucky enough to see it.So back we went to the pacific coast in Mendocino.Of course it was no where in sight. Why should it be?So I whistled loudly and there it popped out of it's home.I went to it and said hello and from there on it was all good.He became my best buddy!I took tons of pics.Soon a crowd gathered ,intrigued by what they saw.Tons of pics, videos and people. It made my day to see this baby! I was given the name of " Weasel whistler'" There are no words to describe this moment and the cuteness of this little critter.
Habitat:
Coastal Mendocino bluffs.
Notes:
Please read the Wikipedia link for description etc Mt Diablo had a healthy population of these. They are totally extinct now.One of the reasons being dogs and Canine distemper. The eco system indeed is very fragile. It was nice to see this spotting about 200 miles north of Mt Diablo,if not on it. Hopefully I will get to see the ring tailed cat too.
