Field Notes

Description:

This is a small and agile mongoose that's also known as the Javan gold-spotted mongoose. I was lucky to get any shots of it. It was darting around a mound of lava rocks in a well-visited park.

Habitat:

Its native range is in South Asia. It prefers dry forests and scrub lands and generally doesn't occur at altitudes higher than 3000 feet.

Notes:

IUCN ranks the small Asian mongoose as one of the world's top 100 invasive species.
