Description:
Another endemic of Balkan peninsula. Blue starthistle with its large beautiful flowers, gathered in basket-like clusters, belongs to the compositae family. High up to 30 cm. Flowering May - July. The upper surface of the leaves have glandular hairs which limit the evaporation of water from the plant and allow it to survive easier in pastures, meadows, rocky places and other sun-lit open spaces.
Habitat:
Spotted in a dry rocky place of an open meadow at mount Chortiatis (altitude 1200m), Thessaloniki, Greece.
Notes:
Synonyms: Centaurea napulifera subsp. tuberosa, Centaurea tuberosa.
