Field Notes

Description:

Related to the Robin, these Thrushes are mostly dark brown with burnt orange markings. Orange line over eye, throat, breast, belly and bars on the wings. Dark crown, mask, back, tail and U-shape on neck. Females are similar but faded. They have a lovely, yet haunting two tone call that carries through a forest. Shy birds that can be found foraging on the forest floor or perched on branches. I observed these birds, and noticed they slowly move from area to area and are more active early in the day and then you don't hear them later.

Habitat:

Mentioned they love wet forests of conifers. I noticed they were spotted in conifers as well as oak.

Notes:

Spotted in a small area over a creek and they moved on after I photographed them. But heard them in different locations until about noon.
This year here some have said they are having a irruptive year.

They're up in Tilden. My last visit I didn't see or hear any. Today early I spotted these at the Little Farm. And heard more near Jewel Lake. But after a few hours I stopped hearing them.
