Field Notes
Description:
This small moth has a wingspan of 3/4 inch. It is black with bold white spots and marks. The thorax has a white bar across the front and 2 large white spots on the top. The abdomen has 3 white spots. The wings are also black with large median and smaller white spots. The antennae are long, thin and black. The white spots at the margins give the wings a ragged look.
Habitat:
Path through small clearing in riparian woodland near Lewisville Lake.
Notes:
I had never noticed these little guys before I ran across some a few weeks ago in Central Texas. The day of this hike I got excited when I spotted the first one. Then a little while later there were a few more. By the end of the hike, these fellows were out literally by the dozens.
