Field Notes

Description:

A small owl, they have round heads and ear tufts. This is the gray morph, and he blends into the tree so well! We had walked past him 3 times before a nice man asked us if we had seen the owl, and pointed him out to us.

Habitat:

They are common throughout the eastern US in mixed woods forests. This guy was at the visitors center at Laguna Atascosa NWR.

Notes:

This was my first screech owl, and he was very adorable and it was very exciting :)

They are adorable, Sharni! I love them too :)
Thanks Antonio and flowerpatch! It will happen one day :)
These are my favourite owls because of the way they manipulate their face for defense. They're adorable!
Oh my goodness!!! He looks part of the tree bark! Amazing! I have yet to see a owl in the wild!
Thanks Carol, Gerardo, Aj, Tom, Rieko, and Karen! Such an adorable little guy :)
I love the tree too (your last photo)!
Congratulations on your first Screech Owl and great pictures!
Pretty tricky owl. Matches perfectly. That is so amazing how the owl looks so much like the bark down to the pattern and color. Great spot! And your first Screech owl. That is very exciting. I can't wait to spot an owl someday.
