Late Fall Oysters
Sarcomyxa serotina
41.9143, -73.467
Field Notes
Description:
Dry, tan caps with pale yellow gills and short, stub-like stems. The caps ranged in size from 3-6 cm wide, and they were fan-shaped with incurved margins. The gills were attached and were descending the stem.
Habitat:
Growing high up on a snag in a mixed forest.
Notes:
This mushroom has been dubbed as the harbinger of the end of mushroom season as it appears in October to November (after the first frost). In this case, I found them in early December, and they were still in good condition thanks to the odd weather we've had this autumn.
