Field Notes

Description:

Noctuidae; Gesonia sp. cf. obeditalis. I have seen this kind of moth frequently in our area and have a number of photos in my collection which have not yet been posted to Project Noah. I always think of Snout Moths, (Hypeninae) every time I see one, but then (I think) I see it featured in Philippine Lepidoptera where it is placed in the Erebinae. Wikipedia places the genus Gesonia in the family Noctuidae. So, since my specimen is not an exact match for any of the aforementioned, I have to decide where to place it. This time I have opted for what I think is a safer ID, Gesonia sp. cf. obeditalis. I have a similar moth which I posted in Project Noah which I called Gesonia sp. https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/723250685.

Habitat:

I spotted this little moth in grasses and leaf litter in our backyard. It was difficult to photograph because it darted away every time I tried to get close enough for a picture.
