Field Notes

Description:

Groups of about 30 of these snapy looking ducks were grazing on short grass next to a dry creek bed. Rich cocoa coloured heads on males

Habitat:

Wetlands reserve.

Notes:

A dabbling duck and the only extant species in the genus, the females have a white breast and mottled flanks and two white stripes on the face. Males have a black breast with pale grey flanks. The juveniles have a mottled head. Range is most of Australia including Tasmania and parts of PNG. http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Maned+Duck
Must get some decent close-ups of these on a sunny day.
