Field Notes

Description:

Tufted perennial from a decumbent woody base. Stems 15-30cm or more long, ascending. Lower leaves spathulate, the upper ones narrowly lanceolate to linear. Racemes of ten to forty flowers; when in bud, in the axils of slender bracts of equal or greater length. Flowers 8-11mm long, pink, less commonly blue, rarely white, summer. Variable in many small botanical details.

Habitat:

Southern and southern central Europe to south-eastern Russia, in dry, stony and grassy sites. Less hardy than the similar P. comosa and P. vulgaris.
