Field Notes

Description:

endemic to the Lesser Antilles, in severe decline due to habitat destruction, feral predators, hunting, and hybridization with its sister species the Green iguana. bright green juvenile in last photo

Habitat:

dry forests

Notes:

These iguanas are mostly found along the drier west coast of Dominica. I saw this one and about 5 others at Sunset Bay Lodge, an upmarket diving lodge. I went there specifically for the iguanas. I bought a local juice and then hung around for a while stalking the iguanas. They were fairly habituated and let me approach within an arms length.
