Field Notes

Description:

The black orchid is the national flower of Belize, and is not actually black but a deep purple with yellowish-green twisted petals which make it look a bit spiderish.

Habitat:

This orchid is epiphytic, attached to tree branches or in a tree crotch. The one I photographed here was scavenged from a fallen rainforest tree branch near my home in the Maya Mountain foothills.

Notes:

Black orchids may bloom almost any time of the year, and are fairly hardy.
