Buttefly Agraulis vanillae
Agraulis vanillae
-20.3086, -40.3011
Field Notes
Description:
Parasita da pupa da Agraulis vanillae
Parasite of Agraulis vanillae pupa.
Habitat:
Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brasil
Notes:
Butterfly pupa Agraulis vanillae (bottom photo) and parasite egg (top photo). In the pupa, the hole through which the egg was expelled can be seen. The egg diameter is one slightly smaller than the diameter of the pupa. After the parasitized caterpillar turns into pupa, the pupa becomes darkened. The parasite feeds from the pupa until the pupa comes
to death. This is one more reason why only 2% of eggs in the wild reach
adulthood. Observed at the Butterfly House at Centro Educacional Leonardo da Vinci, Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, in a closed jar to avoid contamination.
