Field Notes

Description:

Small, stocky waterbird with a mostly black back and white belly and neck. The white on the neck almost wraps around the back of the neck, and there are a few white patches on the sides. Small bill and large eye. Only one of these guys I saw, and they are listed as endangered by the IUCN.

Habitat:

Saw it just off the coast while doing a whale-watching tour in Auke Bay.
