Field Notes

Description:

The pileated woodpecker is the largest living species of woodpecker. The one I saw was about 18 inches long with a 28 in wingspan. It had a red crest with a white line that started from the bill and went down the sides of the throat. It also had a white line on each of its wings and other than that it was completely black.

Habitat:

I saw this pileated woodpecker in a heavily wooded area next to a road.

Notes:

I saw it on the way to Grotto Falls
