Hmm.. looks even more like Pieris rapae to me. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Pieris_rapae_which_copulates_0928.jpg
New pictures of the adult butterfly added. Hopefully an I.D. can be made
Thanks Martin, Mark, and Nuwan for your help!
It is my understanding that a cocoon (moth) is a pupal casing that is usually spun by the caterpillar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Actias_luna_cocoons_sjh.JPG . A butterfly pupa is a chrysalis and is the specialized skin layer of the final instar of the caterpillar. http://bugguide.net/node/view/12024/bgimage Yours is a chrysalis.
they travel a long way to pupate... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/151876276
Cabbage white. Pieris rapae. I agree. They come in both colors, green or brown http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/197586022
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think A. sordida is likely.
