Field Notes

Description:

Largish moth. Brown with small, white island-like patterns on the back.

Habitat:

Cave in Cappadocia region. I had stepped into one of the hollowed out spaces to get out of the extremely strong Sun when I saw this beautiful moth resting almost at the base of the wall.

Notes:

The Cream-spot Tiger moth of the UK... Arctia villica bears a strong similarity.

Species ID Suggestions

Sorry for the wrong ID, I looked back at the link on A. marchandi, which the end of their forewings have an extra spot. The real species is Arctia fulminans, which is also found in Turkey. The only good picture link I could find was off of ebay 😂 https://www.ebay.com/itm/305341725028 A. marchandi for comparison: https://v3.boldsystems.org/index.php/Taxbrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=347136
Thank you Ornithoptera for giving this moth its name.
Nice Find! This species used to be a subspecies of Arctia Villica, but now bears its own species status. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37234560/
