Field Notes

Description:

A bulbous, spring-blooming, perennial plant with cup like showy flowers. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, as potted plants, or to display as fresh-cut flowers. Most cultivars of tulip are derived from Tulipa gesneriana.

Habitat:

Tulips are indigenous to mountainous areas with temperate climates. To thrive, they require a period of cool dormancy. Climates with long, cool springs and dry summers are ideal. Although perennials, tulip bulbs are often imported to warm-winter areas of the world from cold-winter areas, and are planted in the fall to be treated as annuals. They like sun and a well drained soil.

Notes:

I fill my front yard with spring blooming bulbs. Of these, I find that tulips often do not return the following year, or they sprout but do not flower. They are also a favorite meal of the deer which range freely in the neighborhood. But none of this stopes me from planting dozens of new bulbs each fall,
