Field Notes

Description:

This brilliant chartreuse (yellow-green) lichen is a real standout in any forest. It also has shiny red-brown fruiting bodies.

Habitat:

This likes to grow on cedar and ponderosa pine bark. It prefers sunny locations.

Notes:

It is toxic, used by some western Indian tribes for poison on arrowhead points, but also makes a good dye, being used in ancient times and even today for natural dye colors.
