Field Notes

Description:

I'd always heard of this as the Metallic Wood Boring Beetle, which is a pretty good name for this purplish-glinting beetle. It's about 1½" long, and a noisy flyer, fairly calm and poses nicely for its photo

Habitat:

This beetle was found on a stump in a Madrone/Pine/Oak woodland, which means there's probably dead pine heartwood somewhere nearby.

Notes:

There were a lot of dead Douglas firs around, and I wonder if it was chewing on those, too.
