Field Notes

Description:

Large yellow moth, body about 5cm long, wings at this point about 8-9cm wide. Seems to be quite a golden yellow colour (photo taken in torch light). body the same colour as the main wings colour. Legs and feathery antennae are black. One large eyespot on each wing, brown in the centre, wtih black edge and then pink out edge. A stripe across each wing at the shoulder, black and white. and a stripe across the longest part of each wing, black and pink. The wings appear to be very hairy.

Habitat:

This huge yellow moth was on the window grill outside our cabin in Katavi NP. The cabin was set in open acacia woodland not far from the river.

Notes:

He sat for long, he didnt mind being looked at or photographed, just seemed to be chilling out.
