Field Notes

Description:

Asilidae; Laphriinae; Laphriini; Laphria sp. This Assassin Fly (also known as a Robber Fly) seemed oblivious to my presence as I took some photos. It was probably too busy with its prey (Sarcophaga sp.). According to Wikipedia, this kind of fly injects its prey with enzymes which dissolve the body tissue so that it can be consumed in liquid form. Nice!

Habitat:

This Assassin Fly was spotted in our front yard.
