Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized hawk with narrow, pointed wings. Plumage is mostly white with a grey back and a black patches on the wings, which can make it appear gull-like from a distance. It has large red eyes. Most readily identifiable behaviour is that it hovers when hunting for prey (see pic 2).

Habitat:

Usually found in open grassy areas such as savannas and marshland. I found this particular bird in a coastal wetland.

Notes:

Found this one on Pelican Island Wetland, first perched in a tree and then hovering for food.
