Field Notes

Description:

Creamy white with purple veins and a yellowish-green tinge overall, the Yellowleaf Iris is a bright star on the forest floor. It grows singly or in clumps, with as many as 15-20 blooms in a clump. The leaves aren't really yellow, but medium green. They bloomed from mid April to the first of may in 2012.

,

Habitat:

This was spotted in the Madrone/Oak/Ponderosa pine forest of southern Oregon

Notes:

the spent blossoms coil tightly in a spiral as they wilt -- see my sketch. This could be confused with the Siskiyou Iris
but:
Siskiyou iris (Iris bracteata)
Short leaves overlap along stem, short floral tube
Yellow-leaf iris (Iris chrysophylla)
White or cream flowers, long floral tube, very long style crests
