Description:

Plant is about 7' tall, second year growth. Huge leaves, serrated edges, heart shaped. Stems are hollow. We have paulownia trees along the hillside, but their leaves are thicker, softer on the bottom, and have smooth edges. I'm trying to decide whether to cut it down as a weed, or let it grow where it is right next to the house.

This is Paulownia tormentosa, also known as a princess tree or empress tree. It is not native to the US some authorities consider it to be a troublesome weed, while other horticulturalists advocate its use. It can be very difficult to eradicate because new growth will come from an old stump. Some growers actually cut it down each year to encourage a smaller, younger plant to grow back in the next season.
