Description:
Also known as the Brown-mantled Tamarin. A medium Tamarin 17-27cm (7-10.5") and weighing in at 340-440g (12-15.5oz)Head, shoulders and upper chest predominately black and flanks also black but with white/yellow striations and hind legs deep chestnut/reddish brown. The muzzle is covered is short white hair. There are many subs to this species and they often have colour variations between them.
Habitat:
Found in the NW of Latin America east of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador and into NW Brazil. Diurnal and arboreal and eats fruit, nectar and insects that they gather from crevices in tree trunks. Need large areas with ranges up to 100ha. This small family group was seen in dry lowland forest in Northern Peru.
Notes:
These guys were very shy but a female did come and grab a piece of banana before haring off back up the tree. The third image says it all!!
