Field Notes

Description:

Large, brightly colored orange mushroom found in clusters of several individuals.

Habitat:

Woodland habitat. Found at the base of old locust tree.

Notes:

These specimens seemed older, as they appeared to be withering away. I was thinking Jack-O-Lantern mushroom. Knowing that these are supposed to be bio-luminescent, I returned at night, but they were not glowing. I did not look at the spores, which I need to get better at. Any ID would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks DBCooper. I need to get better about taking a picture of the underside. I've always wanted to try spore printing, but haven't gotten around to it. Seems simple enough.

They certainly look like Omphalotus illudens (Jack O'Lanterns) to me. It's important to get pics of the stem and underside of the cap for mushroom identification. Spore printing can be helpful too.
