Absolutely. The most visible difference is the lack of white on the nape of the neck. Magpies are white whereas currawongs are black. I always hear them before I ever see them (out in the bush anyway), so I know from their song what is what.
Also similar looking birds would be the Chough and black honeyeater.

Hema, this is the bird that was the other possibility for your Torresian Crow spotting. Not quite as big, but the white underside is seen quite clearly. I usually encounter currawongs when I'm out bushwalking. They are a favourite and I love to hear and see them, but I don't often see them around town, and definitely not around my place.
