Caucasus Frog
Rana macrocnemis
41.7309, 44.7937
Field Notes
Description:
Also known as Brusa frog, long-legged wood frog, Iranian long-legged frog, or Uludağ frog, these are medium sized frogs and very variable in appearance. These ones here were dark green with large brown or brown-green spots on the back, and whitish below, with some spots toward the edges. Here, I saw two of them (maybe one or two more, as there were some croaks coming from under the leaves), very loud and showing a pair of grey vocal sacs.
Habitat:
Small pond in botanical gardens of Tbilisi, center of the town. Gardens are beautiful and full of vegetations, and there is a number of small and medium sized pools and water bodies in it. In regards to this species range, the Caucasus frog inhabit a small region limited to Turkey and Caucasus (for range, check here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/5865...) , and looks for forested areas close to water bodies.
Notes:
The ID of these ones was difficult - when I saw it first, I thought Marsh frog, but after a short research became more inclined toward the Caucasus or Iranian long-legged (Rana macrocnemis)... as I'm still not sure, not knowing much about Caucasus wildlife and next to nothing about Caucasus amphibians, feel free to correct me...
