Rhododendron
Rhododendron sp.
48.1664, -123.704
Field Notes
Description:
This large shrub's flowers are showy and fuscia-colored. Each flower's filaments are hot pink and the anthers brown. The plant's leaves appear to be diseased with some kind of rot (mold, perhaps?). The shrubby tree was around 7' tall.
Habitat:
Grows in full sun on a pacific seaside cliff at Salt Creek Campground near Tongue Point.
Notes:
May be R. heliolepis (https://rhodygarden.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/61-R.-heliolepis…) vs. denudatum (possible/less likely). With more than 1000 species in the genus, it's very tough (and probably not possible) to ID this plant. There are many hybrids.
