Caterpillar in a Threatening Predator Pose
21.44, -98.88
Field Notes
Description:
When I disturbed this Caterpillar, it quickly turned the upper half of its body upside-down and away from the leaf and assumed the pose of what can only be described as a tiny shrew. Shrews are quite vicious predators and would be thoroughly frightening to just about anything small. The caterpillar was about 3 cm long. The 3 pairs of tiny true legs are sticking up into the air. The "eye" is false, and the true head is very tiny at the very tip of the "snout".
Habitat:
Huasteca Forest, Edward James Surrealism Park, Xilitla, San Luis Potosí.
