Strangled Stinkhorn,Swiss Cheese Stinkhorn
Staheliomyces cinctus
-3.52389, -72.3374
Field Notes
Description:
About 8" tall, this lacy stinkhorn was ephemeral -- I saw it whole and gorgeous while out on a walk without my camera, but when I returned a couple of hours later it had already deteriorated to this state. When first seen, the outline of the tip was like a rounded arrowhead with a hole in the top. The constricting band looks like napkin ring. It is dark brown and slimy with spores.
Habitat:
On rainforest floor in moderately dry conditions, on the north bank of the Amazon River, Peru
Notes:
Lesson learned: Never go for a walk in the rainforest without your camera!
There's a great photo of one here: http://mushroaming.com/Amazing_Amazon
