Field Notes

Habitat:

These Brown Soldiers were spotted, in the rice field behind our house, on unidentified foliage growing along the turf dyke which runs through the middle of the field.

Notes:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Nymphaliini; Junonia hedonia ida Cramer, 1775. The first two photos are dorsal and ventral views of the same butterfly and the other four photos show another butterfly of the same subspecies. I mention this because, when I took the photos this morning, I thought that they might be different subspecies. However, on checking in Philippine Lepidoptera, I saw that they display two butterflies, exactly the same as those shown in this spotting and they are, in fact, the same subspecies.
